Epilepsy Awareness Month: Easton's Story, Part 2

I have received an overwhelming positive response from Part 1 of Easton's Story and many requests to write a follow up.

Firstly, I want to say thank you to all of you for sending your positive thoughts and prayers Easton's way. I think it is safe to say that they have helped enormously.

Secondly, I would like to express my appreciation and gratitude that I have for all of my readers, who continue to support and inspire me. I can only hope that Part 2 lives up to your expectations!

March 12: Surgery Day

I remember waking up to the buzz of my cell phone, far before my alarm was set to go off. Dad was texting all of us, letting us know that Easton had headed in. The text read, "Easton is gone into surgery now, toughest thing I have ever had to do was kiss him and tell him I loved him.

One can only imagine what that must feel like.

As the day went on, we all anxiously waited to hear news, any news. Finally at 1:33pm, 6 and a half hours after the surgery began, we received another text. It read, "so we just saw Easton and talked to the doctor, surgery went good. Said they definitely saw the abnormality in his brain, talk soon! Love you all." Relief.

That afternoon, around 4pm, we received our first video of Easton waking up and coming back into the world. Already, he was blowing kisses and mouthing, "I love you." His little personality was shining through much sooner than expected. More relief.

Both Cheryl and Trevor kept everyone informed over the next few days, through Facebook.

Today was a bit of a roller coaster for Easton, when we got to the hospital this morning he had just woken up, he was in a good mood and had apparently sang O Canada to the nurses on his floor. You could tell when his pain meds were wearing off, cause he would get grumpy! His poor little face is swollen so bad, I really feel for the little fart, you Can tell it bothers him, he repeatedly keeps telling us he wants to go home. Then like magic the meds start doing the job and he's telling me to tickle him, laughing and goofing off! He had his first visitors today, gramma, papa, auntie LeeAnn and Beaner, of course they showed up when he was tired and grumpy so they didn't have a good visit at all, 20 minutes after they left he was awake and alert again, go figure! He has been eating and drinking real good so there are no worries with that. We got moved out of the NICU ward at noon and are now located up in 4D, it much quieter and much more comfortable for everyone. Cheryl and I are taking turns staying the night with Easton at the hospital, tonight is my night and after supper Easton and I watched the oilers game, he loves his oilers, every time they show a player up close he yells GO OILERS- WOOHOO! Thankfully he fell asleep before the third period started! Well that pretty much sums up our day, here's hoping for a good nights rest, Trevor.

Today was a good day for Easton. He had lots of visitors including gramma macaroni. He even got to meet some Edmonton Eskimos. He is doing really well and we might even get out of here on Sunday. I cant believe it hasn't even been 72 hours and he is doing this well. My biggest fear before surgery was that he wouldn't be our same little boy when he woke up. Thankfully he is the same funny and sweet little monkey he was before. — feeling thankful, Cheryl.

Finally my time had arrived to visit Easton.

Jeff and I drove up and arrived around ten, when Dad and Delaney met us in the parking lot and led the way to Easton's room.

As I walked through the halls, all I could think about was how great this place was. Not that I would ever wish for anyone to stay in a hospital, but I think The Stollery is the place to be. It doesn't have that hospital feel and didn't reek of latex. It's filled with clouds and toys and smiles.

Easton was laying in bed with Cheryl, watching his shows when we got to his room. Once he noticed we were there, he greeted us with his big, beautiful smile. He looked like himself, or at least like half of himself. If you were to look at Easton's profile from one side, you wouldn't even be able to tell he was any different. But as he turned to look at us his swollen face and half shut eye stared back at us.  He knew who we were right away and of course was drawn to Jeff. Easton is definitely a boy's boy.

Noelle and Tyler showed up shortly after and we all decided to go for a stroll. Easton jumped right into his car and he and Delaney toured us around his temporary home. He was talking like his usual self, aside from a bit of a lisp caused by his swollen cheeks. He threw out many, "I love you's" and couldn't stop talking about the Oilers and Thomas (the train).

After a few hours of visiting Easton's nap time had arrived, but we all got kisses before he drifted off.

Jeff and I headed home feeling content with how things were going.

Later that night Trevor posted the following status:
So, as I lay hear listening to the late night hospital sounds, the different beeps and tones, the shuffling of the nurses feet, the dude next to us snoring like a banshee, I couldn't think of another place I would want to be. I think the doctor forgot to inform us that they must have removed the part of Easton's brain that tells him to go to sleep at night, he finally went to sleep at 12:02 am, I must say I became quite frustrated with the little man, after multiple walks to go on the alligator (translation elevator) about ten different trips to the bathroom, the fake snoring from him, the restlessness, the frustration was really beginning to get to me until I realized that this is really telling me that Easton is going to be just fine, one of the concerns Cheryl and I had was "are we going to get the same kid that we took in to the hospital" well this night has pretty much confirmed that! He was super excited when Lauren McMurray and Noelle McMurray showed up with their boyfriends, Easton has such a cool bond with Tyler Strain and Jeff Archibald, all he could talk about this evening is how much he loves them all! Easton's lips are probably the most sensitive parts of his body today, you would think it would be his head, but he probably gave out 3000 kisses today, he has every nurse that has come across him wrapped around his little finger! Looks like we may be discharged later this afternoon, but we have to stay in the city for a couple of days so we can see the doctor in his clinic, we are really looking forward to getting home and getting back to a routine. So tonight I will leave you with Easton's favourite phrase of the day"hello, I wuv you! " — with Cheryl McMurray.
I took more video than pictures, so if you're interested in seeing how well Easton is doing be sure to check out my latest vlog.

March 16

Easton was discharged from the hospital and headed to hangout at the condo for a few days with his parents. They waited patiently to meet with the Doctor and find out what's next.

March 18

Today Easton has gotten the okay to head home! For now, he will be monitored to ensure that everything continues in the right direction. In three months, Easton will return to The Stollery for a follow up EEG. He is doing great and, believe it or not, he is healing quite nicely.

Until next time,

L.
